New, practice-near e-course on recovery launched, free and multilingual

On 9 April 2026 KBT Vocational College officially launched its e-learning course "Recovery-oriented practice with the CHIME model in modern mental health and addiction services". Across eight modules it takes participants from a basic introduction to recovery through to implementing recovery-oriented practice in their own workplace.

"I believe this is the most comprehensive course offering on recovery available today. It exists in several languages, so the potential for spreading it is considerable, and the design makes it easy to access and competence-giving," says project owner Karl Johan Johansen. He highlights in particular the modules on trauma-sensitive care in a recovery perspective and on cultural competence, two needs that emerged clearly from the mapping carried out before the course was developed.

Availability is central to the whole project. The course is free of charge and available in several languages, including English, Norwegian and Hindi, which makes it directly usable by KBT's partners in India and by international services working with multilingual populations. Everything is built to move from theory into practice. The theory is broken into small parts and tied to practical work, and each module comes with downloadable resources, conversation-tool templates, reflection tasks, worksheets, so participants build their own toolbox adapted to their workplace. The format is blended learning: text, video, audio, quizzes and worksheets, and the course can be taken individually or in a group with shared reflection sessions.

Each module takes roughly an hour, and the course can be taken from A to Z or module by module, whenever it suits. It has been designed with a view to later approval for micro-credits, a small number of study points, for example one per module.

The primary target group is practitioners in municipal mental health and addiction services, but at the launch it was pointed out that the course fits far wider: specialist health services, refugee services, correctional services working with people in a recovery process after serving a sentence, NAV employees working with marginalised groups, and students in mental health who often have limited knowledge of practical recovery work.
