Study visit to Ex-IN in Germany: experts by experience
2022

Ex-IN in Germany trains what they call experts by experience. Staff from KBT joined one of their twelve training modules to see the teaching in practice.
Over the past decade, training concepts for peer support workers have developed in parallel in several European countries. The concepts and cultures differ, but the core competence is the same: experience.
Ex-IN does not use the terms consultant or employee, but expert by experience, placing lived experience on an equal footing with professional expertise. Their courses consist largely of self-development, life skills and learning how to use one's own experience.
First consultant Anne Hirrich and rector Karl Johan Johansen took part in one of the twelve modules, each delivered over a weekend. The module they joined was about accompanying and supporting others, with communication theory and models applied in group work.
“It is about getting out of your own bubble. We use this exchange of experience to develop our own teaching and stay close to practice,” says Anne Hirrich. They also presented KBT Vocational College to the course participants.
